VC: ‘Education needs rebirth, practical approach to societal challenges’
VC: Nigeria’s educational system needs rebirth to equip students with knowledge, skill sets, mental and practical capacity needed to tackle myriad of challenges facing the country.
Vice Chancellor of Lead City University, Prof. Kabiru Aderemi Adeyemo, said this at the 14th convocation ceremony of the university, which produced 107 first-class graduates.
He emphasised that the academia should concentrate research efforts on practical approach to solving social and economic challenges through town-and-gown strategic and deficit-closing approach to research.
This, he said, would go a long way in making resources spent on academic exercise and research worthwhile and problem-solving. He added that good research outputs would lead the country out of the woods.
The VC said the grads were “well-equipped to make trail-blazing contributions towards solving the immeasurable socio-economic challenges threatening the delicate fabrics of the society and Nigeria.”
He said despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020/2021 academic was eventful, and the university got approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC) to run new post-graduate and undergraduate programmes.
He commended the university’s academic members of staff for making remarkable achievements in research space, leading to various awards and recognitions.
IN another development, Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Prof. Joseph Fuwape, has reiterated the commitment of the institution to always play leading roles in the development of science and technology in the country.
According to him, the achievements of FUTA’s researchers and students, particularly in the areas of space research, software innovation, robotic engineering and the energy security, show the quality of human resources in the university.
Fuwape, who stated this during a press conference to herald and formally declare open the 40th anniversary of the university, described FUTA as a “unique citadel of academic and technological excellent.”
