Lesotho: Education to Host Symposium
The Principal Secretary of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education and Training, Dr John Oliphant has announced that the ministry will hold a two-day Curriculum and Assessment Symposium at Manthabiseng Convention Centre from 28 to 29 March 2023.
He disclosed this at the press conference held in Maseru on Monday.
Dr Oliphant said the main objectives of the symposium are to provide a platform for stakeholders to reflect on and interrogate the current status of basic education curriculum reforms, and also reflect on the new basic education curriculum and gather information from stakeholders for possible ways to address the identified gap.
He noted that the ministry has implemented many reforms in the past years yet very little is known about them in the level of stakeholder involvement.
He stressed that this lack of information on stakeholder involvement carries the risk of a lack of ownership, saying with this dearth of information, relevant stakeholders often encounter challenges in identifying the roles they can play towards the effective implementation of educational reforms and initiatives.
He said this two-day curriculum and assessment symposium will bring together under the same roof all stakeholders in the educational fraternity including representatives of relevant ministries, departments and agencies to engage and also interrogate salient issues in education in the 21st century.
He added that stakeholders will further engage in robust discussions on the net effect of the current status of education and speculate the future of the Lesotho basic education curriculum. He remarked that this will be attained through presentations, panel and group discussions as well as question-and-answer sessions.
Dr Oliphant, therefore, expressed gratitude to the development partners and sponsors for their never-ending support in Lesotho education to make it more accessible, relevant and to be of high quality.
This symposium will be the first of its kind to be held in the country.
